ABOUT
For more than 24 years, I’ve worked in the nonprofit world, including 15+ years designing learning experiences and developing leaders.
The jobs have looked pretty different over the years, but apparently I have a type: give me people to develop, something complicated to figure out, and a reason to create a better way to do it.
I love taking something that feels messy or overwhelming, figuring out what people actually need, and turning it into something clear, creative, and practical.
Over the years, that has looked like designing week-long programs, developing leaders, creating online training, facilitating workshops, building onboarding systems, and leading teams of staff and volunteers. Basically, I like the intersection of people, learning, creativity, and making things actually work.
I don’t think good training starts with “What information do we need to give people?” It starts with:
What do people actually need to be able to do?
And then my brain pretty quickly goes to: Okay, but how can we make this engaging?
Can they experience it? Practice it? Make a decision? Talk about it? See it happen? Try it and get it wrong? Because there are only so many slides full of bullet points anyone should have to sit through.
I love finding unexpected ways to bring learning to life. Sometimes that means a story or scenario. Sometimes it’s a character, a video, a hands-on activity—or something completely different that gets people participating instead of just listening.
But the creative part isn’t there just to make training more fun. It needs to help people understand, remember, and actually use what they’re learning. If it looks great but doesn’t help someone do something differently, we probably missed the point.
Outside of work, family is a big part of my life. We’re scattered around the country, so I’ll take just about any excuse to travel and spend time together.
I also love being outside, finding a good trail, and, when I get the chance, heading to a Nebraska football game.
